The Magic of Poetry 🌹

What is poetry? Many of us think that poetry is the art or skill of writing poems. True, but poetry is actually a repetitive pattern in which the emotions of a poet are expressed artistically by words. Poetry is a vast subject dealing with many varieties, it's a subject as primitive as man himself, starting from the old kings and queens to the poets of the 21st century, poetry is still used as a means of communication.

To make a poem more aesthetic and memorable, poets tend to use various figures of speech like alliteration, personification, metaphors etc. to beautify the poem even more. The magic of a poem is that, it starts to come together word by word, line by line and in the end it fulfills it's purpose leaving the reader with a sense of calmness. It not only tells us about what happened or what the poet was thinking or feeling at that time, it makes us understand how it would have felt if we would have been the poet himself. It helps us to feel different emotions like sorrow, gaiety, love or guilt from a different perspective. Some poems even have the power to change a person's mindset altogether, that's why most of the poems always feel so personal.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF POEMS?

There are many types of poems, some have very deep meanings whereas some are just goofy and hilarious and tend to describe contrasts of everyday life from the viewpoint of a poet. Some are full of sadness and guilt whereas some are filled with thoughts and expressions of love, friendship and happiness. To prove this point I have made a list of three poems written by three exceptional poets.

1. The Daffodils- I wandered lonely as a cloud : WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

The Daffodils is a sweet and a simple poem composed by the extraordinary nature loving poet William Wordsworth. In this poem, he describes his experience about going out for a stroll when he suddenly sees a never-ending stretch of golden daffodils dancing to the tunes of the breeze. Wordsworth also tells us that how, at first glance, he wasn't able to truly understand and enjoy the beauty and the wealth of the flowers. But now, whenever he is in sorrow or engulfed by feelings of loneliness, the picture of the daffodils flashes in his mind and fills his heart with love and happiness. The message that this poem conveys is that sometimes even the smallest and the simplest of things around us can give us joy and hope in times of solitude. We should always look out for such things and try to embrace them instead of ignoring them.

2.IF : RUDYARD KIPLING

The poem 'IF' is written by the legendary poet Rudyard Kipling. It is an inspirational poem which describes all the qualities a successful person must and mustn't have. If we reach to the top and get our much-awaited result, then we should be proud of ourselves, but at the same time we must not let the pride go to our head and carry us away. We should not despair in times of disaster, but encourage ourselves to try harder next time. A person should accept himself as the way he is and never be afraid to speak about what's really on his mind. Being courageous and risking all your achievements for that one thing truly makes a person strong, both mentally and physically. To become royalty but still act like a commoner, is a feat that not many people are able achieve in their lives. If a man has all these traits and still doesn't think of himself as great, then that man is sincerely the most honest creation of God.

3.Sonnet 18 : WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

A poem by The Bard was necessary in my list. Sonnet 18 is a love poem written by the one and only, William Shakespeare. Shakespeare asks his beloved whether he could compare him to a sweet summer's day. He says that the days in the summer tend towards the extremes, they are shaken by the rough winds and and the scorching heat of the sun. But, his beloved is much "more temperate and lovely" than the summer. Day by day the summer starts to fade away as "every fair from fair sometimes decline". But the main reason as to why his beloved is different from the summer is that "Thy eternal beauty shall not fade" as it is now preserved in the lines of the poem and now it will last for eternity, "as long as men can breathe and eyes can see".

So, now I would like to conclude this blog by saying that poetry is actually a way of expressing language by putting the emotions into the words. Every person has a different style of poetry suited for him or her, according to his likes or dislikes. And as rightly said by the great poet Robert Frost-"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words."

The Road Not Taken- Robert Frost (one of my most favourite poems)
