Anthropocene : The Age Of Humans

About a million years ago, nature ruled us. The early humans moved from one place to another if the temperatures got too hot or too cold. They searched for places which provided them raw materials for their tools. The earliest civilizations were all dependent on water sources. Long story short, WE ADAPTED TO THE NATURE. And we had to, we literally had no other option...no technology, no education...nothing. But, as we explored our distinctive minds we started becoming aware of our capabilities. First we started cultivating the land which led to small settlements, then we started taming the wildlife and now we are actually reclaiming land from seas and oceans. In this new era of inventions and discoveries we have twisted Mother Nature to dance to our tunes, we have commanded HER TO ADAPT TO US.

WE KNOW IT'S A PROBLEM, RIGHT?

People say that climate change is the main issue of the 21st century, the dangerous problem that's threatening our very existence, yet they carry on like before. Around 150-200 species become extinct per day. But no, you never hear any "important announcements" or "breaking news" about it. The people are totally unaware about this, so from a different perspective it's not even their fault. There are absolutely no signs, no restrictions, just hundreds of torn down forests, melted icecaps, flooded ecosystems and homeless wildlife. This proves that NATURE ALWAYS HITS BACK. For example, who knows, the COVID-19 outbreak might just be a way of Mother Nature to get some time to heal from the numerous wounds and scars that we have given her. Who's fault is it then? Even you wouldn't like if somebody took something of yours forcefully from you. Even you would get mad. Then how can you expect such a powerful force like nature to stay silent?

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

An increase in temperature of 1 degree Celsius can melt icecaps, cause forest fires and make drought-prone areas even more arid and barren. If we keep burning fossil fuels at the current rate, then our storage is most likely to get depleted by 2050 (I wouldn't even be 50 years old by then!). The hazardous emissions increase the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which are the major contributing factor to the increase in temperatures. But we all know the solutions to these problems, use CNG, reduce plastic, recycle metals....the problem is that we never implement them! Everything we do, every action we take, every detail we overlook, is going to effect the future generations, even the present Gen Z's. But by then we would not be able to do anything, it will have been too late...and as everyone knows, there's no use crying over spilt milk. The need of the hour is not small steps, it's drastic leaps and enormous jumps, then only we may see the much needed difference.

UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL

I'm pretty sure all of you might have heard about the Paris Agreement. It's a legally binding international treaty on climate change. The goal of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming well below 2 degree Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degree Celsius. Well is it working so far? Yes and no. Scientists say that the small steps taken by countries are helping in reducing the greenhouse emissions but it we keep exploiting our resources at the present rate then the temperatures are going to increase to 2.6 degree Celsius higher by the end of this century. What we need is sustainable and effective development, We need to increase our level of action, increase awareness about this major problem, build better economies and search for more non-polluting renewable resources...and all of this can't be done by one person or one country, every single organism on this Earth has to play its own part...no matter how small.

A HELPING HAND

The above picture is of my aunt's (bua) garden. You will find everything there...mangoes, almonds, papayas and different kinds of pretty, pretty flowers!! All of us can play our own part...set up a birdbath, plant trees wherever you can (and take care of them too!), buy indoor plants if you don't have space (they bring happiness) and try to reduce the use of plastics. Because in the end, it's all the small steps that make a huge difference😀

So remember guys, that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And as rightly said by the climate activist Greta Thunberg, "If a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not going to school, then imagine what we could all do together if we wanted to."
